Pass Lake – Sister Lakes Outcrop

Pass Lake is one of the worst-best kept secrets. And frankly Pass Lake itself can be a bit deceiving. There are for sure some epic views around Pass Lake and definitely some up on the hilltops to the left of the trail. But if you follow the trail, you’ll put Pass Lake behind you and you’ll soon see the Sister Lakes. It’s a short hike of about 5 minutes from the parking lot, but once you get there, you’ll find two amazing small alpine lakes. And behind them in the distance is Grizzly Peak, Lenawee Mountain and A-Basin North Pole (along with the A-Basin Ski Resort). The view is truly stunning and you can kind of take your pick wherever you’d like to setup a ceremony. This is a mountain pass and during the winter this whole area including the driveway & parking lot is covered in 6-10ft of snow. This area is one of the snowiest in the state and you can likely expect it to open later and close earlier than other areas. June and October are typically iffy months depending on weather conditions. There’s no restroom here or anywhere nearby, so plan accordingly. Mountain weather can change rapidly and without much warning, so plan for everything. A side benefit of Pass Lake is that it is a half mile away from Loveland Pass. Loveland Pass is an intimate wedding location in it’s own right, but it can be a great second location for couple’s photos if you have some extra time for it. (As of this writing, there are no official names to these lakes that we can find through the forest service or county GIS. We found an obscure reference to ‘Sister Lakes’ and are running with it. Although, it would appear that someone has claimed the lake for themselves in Google Maps as “Lake Kaz”. But we cannot confirm this name. )
